LO4- Be able to record cinematic quality footage

For this scene of my short film, the lighting that I used is fluorescent lighting. This is because the indoor location in which I filmed this scene used fluorescent lighting. The lighting also works to manipulate the  characters on the camera because it blacks out the background so the audience are focused on the characters and not by any background props.
For this scene of my short film, I used natural lighting. This is because this scene was an outdoor scene. The outdoor natural lighting was perfect to manipulate the camera. This is because the camera settings were changed in order to make the scene look perfect. I did this by making our film 30 fps and making the light exposure consistent so the natural lighting looked the same throughout.
For this scene in my short film, the lighting that I used is a tungsten halogen lamp. This was to light up the background. Also the lighting helps understand the scene. This is because it helps see the props which is important in this scene and helps see the characters facial expressions.

The frame rate I shot my short film in was 24fps-30fps as that gives a smooth look to the scenes therefore conveying a clearer message to the audience on what is happening. This means my audience can better understand the story which will ensure that they enjoy watching.

The camera settings I used in the opening scene created meaning as I used an ISO of 3200 which means that I let more light into shot which creates a sense of joy and happiness as the main character is about to do a hobby of his, drugs. In the following scene where Mac walks into the classroom, our ISO was 0 as we used natural light from the windows as well as lights from inside the room. This creates meaning as the purity of natural light conveys that Mac is currently feeling clean and healthy. Despite not using ISO, the scene stayed crisp and smooth so it enjoyable for my audience to watch.

Our unit 5 short film meets generic conventions of a social realist informative comedy - this means that it is a hybrid genre. According to Steve Neale (1995) successful genre films have repetition and difference. We believe we did this because we tried to subvert conventions glamourising unsafe sex in our cinematic production, but also featured familiar social realist settings. This is because of the setting of the school and a bar. This is because the areas are usually happy and possibly artificial. The film also shows a few establishing shots to show the change of location. Comedy films are often quite bright so show the light hearted nature, whereas social realist films can be dark and gritty with low key lighting. The scenes are also quite well lit using either natural lighting or atmospheric lighting when the characters are joking around. Also the themes, this means drugs, friendship and drinking reflect social realist conventions - these themes are also shown by the cinematic camera settings whereby we changed the aperture on the DSLR to give a low key effect to reflect the genre of social realism. We also have a lot of short and mid range shots. This helps with the establishing shots and works well with them. Also, in the narrative structure is Todorovian (1977) which is generic of comedy films as they have a clear clear disruption, as our main character does, there is more than one protagonist which is popular in comedy films. Also the character types fit Propp (1928) classic, barring the Princess character  - as there is a helper and a donor as well as the protagonist.
