LO5- Be able to edit cinematic quality footage

The sound effects that were used in this film were; we changed the audio quality in the scene in the pub. This was to make the audio more clear when the characters are talking to each other. We also added music to the intro and the outro. This is so there is no awkward silences when the intro and outro is being played. We have used different lights in the editing. The lighting is clear throughout so you can see the characters when they are the most important part of the scene. The transitions in the short film are sharp establishing shots. This is so the audience know the location of the characters and so their is no awkward pauses throughout. Also, the editing is non continuity editing. This is because the location of the film changes throughout so the conversations end. When the scene is film in one location the editing is continuity editing so a conversation doesn’t cut. We filmed our footage with cinematic quality equipment such as the DSLR camera and an iPhone X. Using this footage allowed us to get the clear shots that we needed in 30 fps. We made sure that we filmed in location with good audio quality and good lighting. For example, we first tried to film one of the scenes outside. When we looked back at the footage the natural lighting didn’t match the film and the characters were too bright. The meant that we had to change out location of film to indoors where the lighting was better quality for our film. The outdoor filming meant that our low angle shots were hard to film because of the sunlight and the indoor low angle shots were much easier to use as the lighting was easily adjustable and you can change the camera settings indoors so the lighting matches in the film throughout. Also, the wind had an effect on the audio outdoors so it wasn’t very clear. This meant that indoors wasn’t affected by wind and made the audio much more clear.

Because our film is a comedy film, we decided to use editing techniques that link with the genre. Our film was also clear on the story. We did this by letting the audience know what day it is by using Todorov's conventional structure theory. This means that narrative structures followed a formula. This means that narratives starts with an equilibrium, an actor or character disrupts the equilibrium, a quest to restore the equilibrium begins, the narrative continues to a climax and the resolution occurs and equilibrium is restored. This can also be simplified to a story has a beginning, middle and end. Our film is a linear narrative. This means that our film doesn't go back in time e.g. flashbacks. Our story only progresses forward in time because it is easier for the audience to understand. We only see flash forwards throughout the film. Our film is an action code. This means our film relies on the cause and effect theory throughout. The cause and effect theory is something happens and it causes effects for the character. The problem is usually solved at the end. David Newman's representation theory. this means that the working class are a problem to society. This is because in our film, the main character is causing a problem which represents the working class. The main protagonist is also in a working class group. This means uneducated youths. In the scene when the main protagonist finds out he has a rash. The scene cuts when he is half way through his sentence. This is to add comedic effect. This was also done so the audience know what the character is going to say. The sound that is used throughout our short film is diegetic sound. This is sound that originates from within the film. The term diegetic is used because the sound occurs in real time. During editing, we used non diegetic sound for the music for the introduction.

Overall, many narrative theory's occur to make the film more enjoyable for the audience.

This is my final piece of cinematic quality footage.

This is where we implemented the title sequence after the first scene. We used a title sequence so our audience knows the title of the film and the cast within the short film. It also tells you the editor and where is was produced. We know the text is in there as there is green fx box inside the purple graphic. Below, there is a green box which is how we know there is music in the background of the title sequence. The music we used was quite jolly which matches Mac's mood at the start. This links to Todorov's theory of a conventional structure where at the beginning of the short film Mac is quite happy, joking around with friends but there is a gradual issue that's arises where Mac finds symptoms of STD. However, normality is restored when Mac goes to the school clinic to find the truth. Our outro sequence also, has the Jolly music which links Claude Levi Strauss' theory of binary opposition. This is because the music is joyful whereas at the ending shows Mac disappointed that he has an STD.
